Sometimes within a load of reed there will be some darker and lighter bundles which some customers find disconcerting and it can make a new roof look patchy. Unfortunately on a large roof the Thatcher has to use the reed as it comes and he does not have the option of sorting maybe 2000-3000 bundles by colour variation. Some of this reed may have grown in more brackish water which would account for the darker tones. These different shaded bundles will not wear at different rates and it certainly does not mean that one bundle is better quality than another. After about 6 months the roof will tone down to the same colour – maybe sooner if there is a lot of rain.
