Thatching Styles

P1030826The reason thatching is referred to as a craft is because every Thatcher ‘interprets’ a thatched roof in his own way and leaves his own mark or stamp on it.

Here is a roof that we thatched in Bedfordshire about 9 years ago-hence why the ridge is showing some wear.  Sometimes I will leave it to our Thatchers to choose what ridge thatching design and cut they want to use in conjunction with the Thatch owner. Our Thatcher on this roof decided on half circles broken by a triangle or V  below the chimney. He could have continued with another half circle below the chimney or kept the cut of the ridge below the chimney at the same height as either side of the chimney.  That was his decision – another Thatcher could have done something completely different.
