Original Roof Timbers

It’s surprising what stripping a thatch roof sometimes reveals.  This is The Black Bear at Sandbach – a grade 11* listed building dating from 1634.  Part of the original roof ‘A’ frame and ridge beam (complete with the thatch still in place) can be seen under the more recent modern roof timbers. The very old nail heads can be seen at the extreme right of the picture which secure the battens to the main roof timbers.
